MILD ENLARGEMENT PROSTATE TREATMENT

Through ultrasound mild enlargement of the prostate was detected in Sept'13, weighighing approx 35 gms. After doing uriflowmetry & PSA (0.41)Doctor prescribed Contiflo icon 0.4, once daily. Since then taking regularly for last 3 years. Prostate size 31gms, PSA 0.4 ( 2014); 39 gms, PSA 0.41(dec'2015).

URIFLOMETRY WAS NORMAL on 28/02/2016.

Shall I have to continue medicine CONTIFLO icon 0.4 life long? What is the side effect? Can I TAKE MEDICINE INTERMITTENTLY? How about trying ayurvedic medicine Prostaid tablet of Baidyanath ( seeing regular advertisement)

Hello dear Sir,

Contiflo(Tamsulosin),a drug belonging to the group of drugs called Alpha blockers, is one of the most used meds in prostate enlargement.
An average prostate is about the size of a walnut and weighs approximately 20 milligrams. Thought, its size and weight increases not only with age but with body mass index as well.
Given its location, an increased prostate in both weight and size prevents the normal urination, due to the obstruction of the tube that drains urine from the bladder(Urethra). This is why men with prostate enlargement have a weak urine stream, the feeling of not being able to empty the bladder completely or sometimes not being able to urinate at all.
Contiflo helps relax the muscles in the prostate and in the opening of the bladder. This helps in decreasing the symptoms, BUT Contiflo does not shrink your prostate. Eventually, with the time passing your prostate might get larger as it has happened In your case (it went from 31 g in 2014 to 39g in 2015). PSA (prostatic specific antigen) is increased in cases of prostate enlargement though there is no specific cutoff between an abnormal and a normal PSA level.
Contiflo has to be taken regularly in order to be effective. You cannot take it intermittently because it would not work.

1. More common side effects are - fever, lower back or side pain, cough or hoarseness
2. Less common- chest pain
3. Rare – Dizziness, fainting, sensation of spinning, painful or prolonged erection of the penis
